UNESCO and NIELIT establish a collaborative approach for the development of AI with ethical principles

A Letter of Intent has been signed by Ms. Gabriela Ramos, Assistant Director-General for Social and Human Sciences of UNESCO, and Dr. Madan Mohan Tripathi, Director General, National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology, Government of India. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) established a significant partnership with the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), Government of India, marking a milestone in the pursuit of ethical and responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) development. The two organizations joined forces to advance the implementation of UNESCO's Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence.

As the UN agency responsible for the ethics of science and technology, UNESCO, will collaborate closely with NIELIT to harness the potential of AI technologies for the betterment of society while adhering to rigorous ethical standards.

The partnership will focus on several key areas to advance AI ethics and its impact on society. This includes capacity-building and training initiatives to ensure policy, regulatory, and ethical considerations aligned with UNESCO's Recommendation.

The collaboration will also focus on knowledge generation and exchange including joint research on salient topics and new developments in the ethics of AI. These analysis, insights, and good practices will contribute to the UNESCO Global Observatory on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence.
